HISTORY

The South East Queensland ("SEQ") Aboriginal Sports Recognition Nights have been a tremendous success since they began in 1999 and many Indigenous sports people have been acknowledged and recognised at these events for their contribution to promoting sport and recreation in the Aboriginal community.
The Sports nights evolved from specific recommendations in 'Our Say Our Play' - The SEQ Indigenous Sport and Recreation Strategy compiled and initiated by the Brisbane City Council in 1999.
This important document provides an audit of sport and recreation for Indigenous people throughout South East Queensland and maps out a comprehensive plan for the future. An event like the Queensland Indigenous Sport Night was an identified priority for the Indigenous community of SEQ.
It's been widely accepted that the next step for these SEQ awards is to promote this exciting initiative to the wider Queensland community to give regional and remote areas the opportunity to be included in an awards ceremony where local sport achievers can be honoured by the rest of Indigenous Queensland.
